The entrance of the rock garden at Ambapua, Berhampur
Similar to the rock garden in Chandigarh, the first in the country, the Berhampur rock garden was built by BeDA over 9 acres with an investment of around Rs 14.85 crore. It was opened to public in Oct 2023.Almost all sculptures installed in the rock garden have been carved out from stones while concrete structures inside it are designed like rocks.
Besides the sculptures of ancient civilization, a watch tower, children’s park, food joint, track for cycling and jogging, space for sitting, light of joy (LED Park) and toilet complex form part of the garden.Mirror maze and cosmos gallery are the most attractive features of the garden. Mirror maze was set up with a unique “ice age” theme. When a person enters it, multiple images of the visitor are reflected in the dazzling light. He or she feels like walking on ice. On an average, 250 people visit the garden every day, sources said. The organisation can use the parking area, install more facilities in the park after taking permission from BeDA and engage its own employees. “We have withdrawn our staff, including security guards,” said Ramesh Chandra Hansada, secretary, BeDA. The authority had engaged around 30 people, including 10 security guards. “BeDA has incurred around Rs 2 lakh loss every month on it,” said an officer of BeDA.
