Avadi corpn to build 6cr fish market at Thandurai

Chennai: To curb fish sales along roadside, provide hygienic conditions for vendors, and improve sanitation and traffic conditions, Avadi corporation has decided to build a modern fish market at Thandurai near Pattabiram at a cost of 6 crore.According to corporation officials, the market will have at least 200 stalls and is expected to benefit around 150 fish vendors. The market will be equipped with modern amenities, including individual stalls with cold storage facilities to help vendors store fish safely. Parking facilities and ramps will also be provided to ensure easier movement and handling of goods for vendors and customers.

Many fish vendors now operate by encroaching on roads and pavements, causing inconvenience to pedestrians and commuters. Residents raised repeated complaints about unhygienic conditions and improper disposal of fish waste, which is often dumped in the open. Avadi corporation commissioner R Saranya told TOI the civic body is keen on strengthening infrastructure for vendors. She added that, on a larger scale, the corporation plans to identify and notify vending and non-vending zones to regulate street vending in an orderly manner.ā€œOnce we receive funds from the govt, tenders will be floated. We are planning to complete the project within this year,ā€ she said.J Jayakumar, secretary of TN Progressive Consumer Welfare Association, said, ā€œThis was a long-pending project. Until the modern market construction is completed, an alternative space should be allocated by corporation.ā€
