Panchkula: Five days after retired Lieutenant General K S Mann died in a hit-and-run, Panchkula police on Wednesday arrested an auto-rickshaw driver allegedly involved in the case.Lt Gen Mann was hit by an auto on Jan 9 and succumbed to injuries at Command Hospital the next day. His wife lodged a complaint at Mansa Devi police station on Jan 10, stating that her husband was struck by a speeding auto-rickshaw near their residence, Panchkula deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Srishti Gupta said.Police registered a case under Sections 281, 125(B) and 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation.

The accused was traced on Jan 13 and arrested the following day. He was identified as Om Prakash, a native of Rajasthan currently living in Manav Colony, Saketri, Chandigarh.Expressing grief, DCP Gupta said, “The loss of a senior officer who served the nation is a tragedy for Panchkula and the country.” She assured strict measures to curb such incidents, including intensified patrolling, drives against rash driving, deployment of additional force in accident-prone areas, strict enforcement of traffic rules, and awareness campaigns on road safety.Inspector Munish Kumar, SHO of Mansa Devi police station, said steps are being taken to install traffic lights and CCTV cameras at key locations to strengthen road safety and law enforcement.
