Kolkata: An ailing senior citizen, residing in the Kamrup area of Assam, was allegedly abandoned by her daughter at a guest house located in Madurdaha since Aug last year. The guest house proprietor, Arijit Kow, hailing from Tangra, arranged for her treatment, even recruiting an ayah, as he pleaded to the administration to move her to a govt-run hospital and ensure he got back his money. Claiming that the Anandapur police did not lodge an FIR despite his pleas, Kow finally moved court in Jan seeking help. This week, acting on the order of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Alipore, Anandapur PS registered a case against the woman. The FIR was registered on Feb 4 under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.According to the complaint, the accused from Kamrup checked into room 101 on the ground floor of the guest house on June 25 around 2.25 pm, along with her ill mother, for a 6-day stay at a daily rate of Rs 1,100. The complainant stated that Banerjee also engaged a female attendant from an “ayah centre” to look after her mother during the stay. The petitioner alleged that on Aug 6, around 1.25 pm, Banerjee left the guest house, saying she would return within a day or two after arranging money for her mother’s treatment and daily needs. The complaint claimed she did not return and did not clear outstanding room rent, food charges, or the attendant’s fees, while her mother continued to occupy the room.Kow told the court that he continued to provide lodging, food, and basic care to the elderly woman on humanitarian grounds. He further alleged that the elderly woman’s health deteriorated and that hospital admission was difficult to arrange without the daughter’s consent. The petition said repeated calls to the daughter’s number went unanswered and that written complaints were submitted to the OC, Anandapur PS on Aug 8 and 22, 2025, and to senior officers of East Division on Aug 31, 2025. The petitioner alleged no effective action followed, prompting the court move.Police said a probe was taken up under the supervision of the OC of Anandapur PS and that a team will be visiting Assam shortly.
