Arrested cop stole drugs from police custody: Pune Rural SP

Pune: The Alprazolam drugs seized from five arrested men, including a constable, were stolen from the centralised storeroom (muddemal room) of the Ahilyanagar police in Dec last year, investigations revealed.Superintendent of police (SP), Pune Rural, Sandeep Singh Gill on Tuesday said, “The Ahilyanagar police had raided a spot in Shrirampur in Ahilyanagar district and seized a large quantity of Alprazolam drugs in May last year. The seized drugs were in the custody of the court, but remained in the muddemal room at the Ahilyanagar police headquarters. The arrested police constable informed us that he stole the drugs from the muddemal room in Dec last year.” The Pune Rural police arrested five men, including police constable Shyam Gujar, since Jan 18 after the seizure of 10.7kg drugs on Pune-Nagar highway in Shirur. A case was registered under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the Shirur police station. The arrested constable Gujar was with the crime branch of the Ahilyanagar police. Besides, Shadab Riaz Shaikh of Shirur, Dnyandev Shinde and Hrushikesh Chitar of Parner in Ahilyanagar district, and Mahesh Gaikwad of Shrigonda, also in Ahilyanagar district, were arrested in the drugs seizure case.SP Gill said, “We have written a letter to the Ahilyanagar police, informing them about the seizure of Alprazolam and how it was stolen from the muddemal room. The constable broke the seal of the seized drugs and stole Alprazolam.”On the possibility of involvement of other police constables or police officers from Ahilyanagar district in the case, Gill said, “Our probe is still on. The arrested constable and others just wanted to make money for themselves by selling Alprazolam illegally.”
