Sporting signature checks, these colourful handwoven lungis are known for being soft and lightweight. They are woven from 60×60 count combed cotton yarn directly into the fabric during the weaving process through the precise interlacement of warp and weft yarns, Saha pointed out. He helped file over 50 GI applications from the twin Telugu states of Telangana and AP.“Unlike printed or post-applied designs, these checks form an inseparable part of the fabric, ensuring durability, consistency, and long-lasting aesthetic appeal.

The distinctive check motifs are the result of specialised knowledge and weaving skills passed down through generations since 1975,” he said.“These skills include careful yarn selection, colour balancing, and meticulous pattern alignment. This combination of technique and tradition gives Ethamukkala Check Lungis their recognisable character and superior quality,” Saha explained. He said the grant of GI protection to this unique handwoven lungi variety will ensure that only authentic lungis originating from Ethamukkala are marketed under this name, safeguarding the product against misuse while preserving its reputation in domestic and international markets.
