Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Police has informed the Punjab and Haryana high court that an apprehension of a threat to INLD leader MLA Abhay Chautala persists, and a WhatsApp threat call originated from a phone number registered in London, UK.The police submitted this information through an affidavit filed by Lakshay Pandey, DSP, security (headquarters), in response to a petition filed by Chautala seeking protection. On Dec 16, 2025, the HC asked the UT police to file a reply. “The threat assessment of the petitioner was conducted and, as per the report, the apprehension of threat persists. However, Chandigarh Police acted promptly and with due diligence. Beat patrolling and PCR vehicle patrolling were intensified in the vicinity of the petitioner’s residence in Sector 9, Chandigarh, as part of preventive security measures to ensure the safety of the petitioner and his family and to thwart any untoward incident,” the police said. According to a complaint by the Chautala family, a WhatsApp call was received by Chautala’s son, Karan Chautala, from a foreign number at 10:55 pm on July 15, 2025. He was allegedly threatened with elimination. Police said that an FIR was registered the same day at the Sector 3 police station, Chandigarh. “Efforts are being made to apprehend the accused. Adequate preventive security measures were already adopted to ensure the safety and security of the petitioner and his family at and around their residence at House No. 80, Sector 9 A, Chandigarh, so as to prevent any untoward incident,” UT police submitted. The police further informed that Chautala, a former MLA, is a protected person of the state of Haryana. According to reports of intelligence agencies, the govt of Haryana already provided Y-plus category security to Chautala. The cover includes one guard team comprising two exempted assistant sub-inspectors and three constables deployed at Teja Khera Farm in Sirsa, along with seven police personnel from Haryana Police for pilot and escort duties.
