‘AMC flyover designs creating fresh traffic choke points’

Ahmedabad: The Leader of the Opposition on Wednesday accused the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) of creating fresh traffic bottlenecks through faulty design of new flyovers and central verges, alleging poor planning has worsened congestion across the city.Raising the issue in the AMC general board, Shehzad Khan Pathan said short flyovers ending abruptly near busy junctions are turning into bottlenecks instead of easing traffic. “Junctions coming up just metres after flyover exits are creating new hotspots. Even ambulances are getting stuck during peak hours. At least 10 major congestion points have emerged due to haphazard planning,” he said.

The Opposition flagged hotspots at the Sabarmati Riverfront–Wadaj Crematorium T-junction, Damru Circle (Ghatlodia), Usmanpura Crossroads, Jivraj Mehta Junction, Vastrapur Gamthal Road, RTO Circle, Navrangpura Railway Crossing, Hardas Bapu Chowk (Bapunagar), Umiya Hall T-junction (Chandlodia) and Akhbarnagar Circle. He warned that the CN Vidyalaya T-junction could become a major future bottleneck once the Panjrapole and Panchvati flyovers are completed, as both bridges descend on the same corridor. The Opposition also criticised AMC’s lack of long-term traffic planning, absence of a junction development policy, and continued on-street parking on narrow roads, warning that congestion was also worsening air pollution.
