AMC approves Rs 62cr for repair of ageing railway overbridges

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has approved a proposal to repair four ageing railway overbridges in the eastern part of the city at an estimated cost of Rs 62.79 crore, paving the way for phased restoration work to enhance commuter safety. The decision was taken at a meeting of the road and building committee on Monday. The bridges approved for repairs include the 40-year-old Girdharnagar Railway Overbridge (Babu Jagjivanram ROB), the 35-year-old Chamunda Railway Overbridge (Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar ROB), the 29-year-old Cadila Railway Overbridge, and the 27-year-old Nathalal Jhagda Railway Overbridge.According to civic officials, a consultant appointed by the AMC inspected the four structures and found signs of structural distress. The inspection revealed minimal gaps between pedestal tops and girder bottoms, along with damaged bearings, making immediate repairs and bearing replacements necessary. Based on the findings, the committee cleared the proposal, allowing repair work to be undertaken in phases. The approval comes amid heightened scrutiny of bridge safety following the collapse of the Gambhira Bridge near Vadodara on July 9, 2025. In the aftermath of the incident, the state govt had ordered urgent inspections and repairs of all bridges across the state.AMC officials said consultants are appointed to inspect city bridges twice a year — before and after the monsoon — and repair works are undertaken as per their recommendations to ensure structural safety and longevity.
