Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s health department conducted inspections at panipuri stalls across the city and destroyed 2,000kg of inedible food items. The teams collected 1,121 samples of panipuri and the water used by vendors, of which 280 were found to contain non-permitted food colours.The estate and health departments of the civic body have initiated action against vendors operating in unsanitary conditions.
More than 250 carts and stalls were cleared during the drive which is expected to continue. The drive was launched based on epidemiological data from the past three years, which indicated an increased risk of waterborne diseases in the eastern part of the city. The AMC identified 26 areas in east Ahmedabad and began a campaign to chlorinate water used by panipuri vendors in Behrampura, Danilimda, Vatva, New Maninagar and Khokhra. After the recent typhoid outbreak in Gandhinagar, the AMC intensified inspections and testing across the city. Health data shows in Dec 2025, Ahmedabad recorded 239 cases of gastroenteritis, 149 cases of jaundice, 180 cases of typhoid and one case of cholera. Last year, the city recorded 6,104 cases of gastroenteritis, 3,148 of jaundice, 4,193 of typhoid and 107 of cholera.
