Ahmedabad: Experts from India and abroad participated in the ninth edition of ‘Advances in Earthquake Sciences 2026′ at the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR), Gandhinagar. The three-day event is themed ‘Intra-plate and Himalayan Seismology: Developments in last 25 Years.’ and was inaugurated by state science and technology minister Arjun Modhwadia.“The institute, founded in 2011 by the then chief minister Narendra Modi, was the first such initiative in India. For the country and the world, the conference will play a major role in developing early warning systems and understanding earthquakes,” Modhwadia said in his speech. “The experts will present studies on how to ensure that buildings can be made keeping in mind the region’s seismology.”
Experts from the govt of India and several national and international research institutions presented their studies and research papers on the first day of the event. ISR officials said that one of the key areas of the conference is Himalayan seismology and understanding different zones that can cause hazards. The conference also coincides with 25 years since the January 26, 2001 Gujarat earthquake, with several papers reviewing scientific advances and regional seismology developments since then.
