Ahmedabad: DEO orders inquiry into assault outside Ghatlodia school

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad city district education officer (DEO) has ordered an inquiry into the alleged assault outside the school in Ghatlodia. City DEO Rohit Chaudhary assigned the investigation to a Class-II officer, who will investigate the matter, verify all related facts and submit a detailed report to the state education department. The inquiry will focus on identifying the circumstances that led to the incident and examining whether there was any negligence on the part of the school administration. Sources indicated that, similar to the thorough probe conducted in the Seventh Day School case, a detailed investigation into National School could likely reveal several irregularities. After the recent assault, the student’s family alleged that the school tried to suppress the matter. They said the student suffered head injuries and was bleeding profusely, but the school only gave him a simple bandage and sent him home instead of arranging proper medical care and tried to downplay the seriousness of the matter. It was also alleged that trustee Ramesh Amin avoided phone calls to keep details of the incident from becoming public. Multiple attempts to reach him were unsuccessful, it was alleged. The school administration, however, maintained that the student’s injuries were minor and that he received medical care. The incident drew comparisons with the Seventh Day School case in Khokhra, where a student’s death led to an extensive investigation under the Right to Education (RTE) Act. That inquiry exposed multiple irregularities, ultimately resulting in the school being taken over by the govt.National School offers education in Gujarati, Hindi, and English mediums. Educators continue to debate allegations that the school admitted “dummy students” to facilitate preparation for competitive exams such as NEET and JEE through private coaching. After the recent incident, calls are intensifying for a comprehensive inquiry into these claims.Amin, the school trustee, said the incident stemmed from a minor scuffle between two Class 10 students during playful interaction. He said both were involved in the altercation, after which one student called his brother to the school, and the brother allegedly assaulted the other student. He said strict action would be taken against the student who made the call and those responsible for the assault. He added that the incident should not be given a different colour, as it began as mischief among students. He said the school management would fully cooperate with the investigation.
