Ahead of guv visit, MC chief inspects Buddha dariya

Ludhiana: Ludhiana municipal commissioner Neeru Katyal Gupta, ahead of a proposed visit of Punjab governor Gulab Chand Kataria to the city, had visited dairy complexes on Monday to check the condition Buddha Dariya. In a meeting that followed, the matter of cow dung still falling into Buddha Dariya was taken up by AAP MP Balbir Singh Seechewal after which Gupta conducted inspections at both Haibowal and Tajpur Road dairy complexes on Wednesday. According to sources, around 200 tonnes of cow dung is generated daily from Tajpur dairy complex and 400 tonnes from Haibowal dairy complex. However, not all dung from Haibowal is lifted. Although the MC had awarded a contract through tender for lifting of the cow dung, the arrangements are still not fully effective. As per current figures, 220 tonnes of cattle dung from Haibowal dairy complex is sent to the CBG plant, while the contractor currently lifts 36 tonnes. The MC lifts 170 tonnes from Tajpur dairy complex. Despite this, nearly 176 tonnes of dung falls into Buddha Dariya every day.During the inspection, strict directions were issued to ensure regular lifting of cow dung from the dairy complexes, so that it does not get into Buddha Dariya. The representatives of dairy owners and the contractor hired for lifting of cow dung from the dairy complexes were also present during the inspection. Necessary directions were issued to ensure unobstructed lifting of cow dung from the dairy complexes.Further, the officials concerned were also directed to ensure proper working of effluent treatment plants (ETP) established to treat dairy waste. The authorities concerned were also directed to expedite the projects to establish bio-gas plants in the dairy complexes.Appealing to the dairy owners that they should own their responsibility and support the authorities in reducing pollution in Buddha Dariya, Gupta stated that the authorities would be forced to take strict action against the violators if someone is caught dumping cow dung in sewer lines or Buddha Dariya.Later, the MC commissioner also reviewed the ongoing projects to dispose of legacy waste and fresh waste at the main dump site of the MC on Tajpur Road. The officials stated that the second phase of the project to dispose of the remaining around 20 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste was also going on at a fast pace. The MC commissioner also directed the contractors dealing with the legacy and fresh waste to expedite the works and to complete the projects within stipulated time period.
