Amritsar: The main suspect in the AAP sarpanch murder case, Sukhraj Singh, alias Goonga, was killed in a police encounter at the Vallaha Bypass area of Amritsar on Wednesday. He is the second suspect to die in a similar manner.
Harnur alias Noor was killed in Bhikhiwind on Jan 6.Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav on Jan 12 announced the arrest of Sukhraj and 6 others in the case. Sukhraj and another person gunned down sarpanch Jarmal Singh at a wedding ceremony held at a resort in Amritsar on Jan 4. Police had tracked the duo to a hideout 1,700km away in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. On Wednesday, a police team was taking Sukhraj to recover evidence when two motorycle-borne attackers ambushed them, firing six rounds, according to Amritsar police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar. During the chaos, Sukhraj attempted to snatch a service weapon from an officer inside the vehicle, police said. In the ensuing struggle, shots were fired, leaving Sukhraj wounded. He was declared brought dead at a local hospital. While one of the attackers was injured and detained, the other remains at large, police said. Earlier, police identified Prabh Dasuwal, a gangster suspected to be in Portugal, as the mastermind of the sarpanch murder case. Police said he had ordered the hit over a personal grudge.
