Dibrugarh: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) conducted specialised runway friction testing at Dibrugarh Airport on Thursday in a move to enhance aviation safety and infrastructure reliability.The exercise utilised the globally recognised SARSYS Runway Friction Tester (RFT), a high-precision vehicle designed to measure the aerodynamic grip and skid resistance of the runway surface.
As aircraft land, high-speed friction between tires and the asphalt leaves behind rubber deposits. Over time, these deposits, combined with environmental factors, can create a “slick” surface, increasing the risk of hydroplaning — particularly during the heavy rainfall common in upper Assam. Thursday’s testing was a proactive measure to ensure the runway meets the stringent safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation and the DGCA.The SARSYS RFT, a specialised car integrated with sophisticated sensors and a retractable measuring wheel, was driven along the length of the runway. This vehicle provides real-time data on the friction coefficient by simulating the braking action of an aircraft. By calculating the ratio of the vertical load to the horizontal tractive force, the system identifies any areas where the surface friction has degraded.Speaking on the successful completion of the exercise, Bangajit Saha, director of Dibrugarh Airport, emphasised the non-negotiable nature of passenger safety.“The safety of our passengers and the integrity of aircraft operations are our topmost priorities. By conducting these rigorous friction tests, we are reinforcing our commitment to maintaining international aerodrome standards. This ensures that every aircraft, from small regional jets to larger commercial carriers, has optimal traction and braking performance, regardless of weather conditions,” Saha said.
