Sivasagar DC inspects accident-prone sites on NH-37, orders preventive measures

Dibrugarh: Sivasagar district commissioner Mridul Yadav on Thursday inspected potential accident-prone sites on NH-37 in the district. The inspection was aimed at assessing the implementation of directives previously issued to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to curb the frequent accidents on the national highway, which sees heavy traffic daily. Significantly, the highway is currently being upgraded to a four-lane road, and work is still ongoing, which has contributed to hazardous conditions in some areas. To prevent road accidents in the district, the DC has been providing constructive and effective directives to the departments concerned during the monthly District Road Safety Committee meetings.During the inspection, Yadav reviewed the progress of measures implemented by NHIDCL as per his directions. These measures are designed to enhance road safety and reduce the accident rate. Among the steps being taken on the national highway are the installation of signages, including directional, speed limit, hazard, and diversion signs. Additionally, safety barriers such as temporary fencing around potholes and construction zones have been erected to prevent mishaps, particularly in areas where work is most intensive.Visibility enhancements have also been prioritised, with roadside speed indicators, delineators, and glow signs being set up to alert drivers, especially during night-time or adverse weather conditions. Furthermore, to address dust-related issues, which can impair visibility and lead to accidents, NHIDCL has been sprinkling water on dusty roads or areas with poor visibility. This measure has been particularly effective in stretches where construction activity generates significant dust.Speaking about the initiative, Yadav said, “Road safety is a top priority for the district administration. The inspection today was to ensure that the measures we have directed are being effectively implemented on ground. We are working closely with NHIDCL to mitigate risks and prevent accidents on this busy highway. The ongoing four-laning project is crucial, but it must not compromise safety. We will continue to monitor the situation and take further action as needed, including issuing new directives if required.Officials from NHIDCL and other road safety stakeholders accompanied the DC during the visit, and further instructions were issued on the spot wherever gaps in implementation were observed. The administration has made clear that follow-up inspections will continue in the coming days.
