Himanta opens Rs 118cr Lovlina sports arena in Lakhimpur dist
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has inaugurated the Rs 118 crore Lovlina Borgohain Sports Arena in Lakhimpur, a landmark complex named after the Olympic medal-winning boxer. Equipped with an indoor stadium, a professional athletic track, and several multi-sport grounds, the arena is designed to nurture emerging talent across disciplines.

Dibrugarh: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday inaugurated the newly constructed Lovlina Borgohain Sports Arena in Lakhimpur, naming the state-of-the-art sports complex after Assam’s celebrated Olympic medallist boxer Lovlina Borgohain, who was also present at the occasion.The sprawling complex, built at a cost of Rs 118 crore, stands as a tribute to Lovlina, who scripted history by winning a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in the women’s welterweight event. She became only the third Indian boxer and the first from Assam to win an Olympic medal.

The facility features a transit house, indoor stadium, staff quarters, two lawn tennis courts, a volleyball court, a football ground, an 8-lane athletic track, and a cricket stadium building with a 5,000-seat gallery. It also includes a cricket ground and a 2,380-seat football gallery, all equipped with modern lighting systems capable of hosting state-level events.Speaking at the inauguration, Sarma expressed pride in dedicating the arena to the public. “Today, I am proud to dedicate the Lovlina Borgohain Sports Arena in Lakhimpur district to the public. The inspiration of our daughter, Lovlina Borgohain, who brought fame to Assam across the world, will now become the driving force for the dreams of thousands of young people,” he said.Lovlina thanked the state govt for the recognition. “This arena belongs to every young athlete who dreams of representing Assam and India. I hope it inspires the next generation to chase their dreams with dedication,” she said.
