Silchar ‘gangrape’: Cops receive medical report, withhold details

Silchar: Police have received the medical examination report of the woman who alleged she was gangraped on the Silchar bypass road on Feb 19 night, but declined to disclose its contents citing legal and investigative reasons.Cachar additional SP (crime) Rajat Kumar Pal said on Wednesday the probe is progressing on multiple fronts and efforts are on to apprehend all those involved. “The investigation is at a crucial stage and fact-finding processes are yet to be completed,” he told reporters.However, police sources claimed that the medical examination did not find corroborative evidence to confirm rape and no external injuries were observed at the time of examination at Silchar Medical College and Hospital. Officials said the investigation is on.According to the woman’s statement, she and her fiancé had stopped near Chengcoorie Road along the bypass when a group of youths allegedly arrived in another vehicle, restrained her fiancé and sexually assaulted her.A case has been registered at Silchar Sadar PS under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions related to dacoity, criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation and gangrape. One suspect has been arrested so far.Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev have written to the Cachar SP seeking stringent action and enhanced security measures, including night patrolling and CCTV installation along the bypass.A number of NGOs also met the SP over past couple of days and urged to reveal the truth in the case. They also appealed to take stringent action against the miscreants involved into the alleged gangrape.
