BENGALURU: A 36-year-old man allegedly tried to steal cash from two ATMs to clear his mounting debts and was arrested within 24 hours. The accused is Hasan Abdul Sab, a resident of VV Giri Colony in Seshadripuram and a native of Dharwad. He allegedly targeted a Canara Bank ATM in Seshadripuram and an HDFC ATM in Cubbonpet early Monday.Initially, police suspected two persons were involved in the attempted thefts. However, upon verifying CCTV footage from both ATM kiosks, investigators noticed striking similarities in the suspect’s appearance and movements.Deputy commissioner of police (central) Hakay Akshay Machhindra formed five special teams Monday to trace the accused, and within 24 hours, Sab was arrested. “Sab’s background, motive and whether he has any associates are being investigated,” the DCP added.A senior officer said Sab confessed to be in huge debt and decided to target ATMs. He had carried tools to break open the cassette and cash dispenser inside the kiosks. However, in one of the ATMs, Sab’s attempt failed after the security siren was triggered, forcing him to flee without stealing any money.
