Telangana govt defers MPTC, ZPTC polls until after budget session, exams

Hyderabad: The Congress govt has reportedly decided to defer elections to the MPTCs and ZPTCs until after the assembly’s budget session and the completion of major student examinations.Chief minister A Revanth Reddy is learnt to have discussed the issue with cabinet colleagues after the formal cabinet meeting concluded and officials had left. Ministers were also said to favour waiting for the Centre’s final decision on the state’s 42% reservation bills, particularly as Census house listing and enumeration are set to begin. The Union govt has already announced that a caste census will be part of the nationwide exercise.

The tenure of the MPTC and ZPTC elected bodies ended in June 2024, leaving the local institutions without elected representatives for several months. While Congress leaders dismissed as baseless rumours that the govt was considering abolishing the MPTC and ZPTC system altogether, officials neither confirmed nor denied any such move.
