4 held for robbing Barpeta jewellery store, 1 absconding

Guwahati: Officers from Barpeta Road police station have arrested four persons in connection with the recent jewellery showroom robbery that took place in the town last Friday.The officers refused to disclose the identity of the robbers as they suspect that the accused might be part of a bigger syndicate.

Barpeta district SP Pushkin Jain said, “Police officers have nabbed and arrested four individuals in connection with the case. However, one accused is still absconding, and dedicated teams are actively working to trace and arrest the accused at the earliest.”The SP added that the accused were arrested from different areas of Goalpara district, during a special operation.“These persons were presented before the local court and have been taken into police remand. We are currently interrogating them,” Jain said.He estimated that during the robbery, the assailants looted valuables worth approximately Rs 5 to Rs 6 crore. Meanwhile, police sources from Barpeta Road PS said they are examining CCTV footage as part of the on-going investigation. “We are yet to find out why they target the showroom,” a police officer said.The incident took place on Friday, when five robbers with their faces covered entered a jewellery showroom. They pointed guns at the employees and attacked them. The staff were tied up, their mouths were covered, and they were taken to a room at the back of the showroom. The robbers also took the employees’ mobile phones and wallets so they could not call for help. Although the incident was frightening, no one was seriously injured.
