60-day consumer rights awareness drive across Goa

Panaji: As part of World Consumer Rights Day, an awareness drive on the theme “Safe Products, Confident Consumers” will be held from Feb 22 to April 22 in Bardez, Mormugao, Salcete, Tiswadi, and Ponda talukas. The drive will be conducted by the Goa Consumer Action Network (Goacan), featuring the rights of consumers under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, the Standards of Weights and Measures (Packaged Commodities) Rules, the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the BIS Act, 2016.Goacan will have a special activity called “Spot the Deficiency, Identify the Official, Pursue the Remedy”, involving volunteers from village consumer forums and campus consumer welfare clubs.Activists will hold awareness actions, lead delegations, and submit memoranda to govt departments, participate in enforcement raids, attend official meetings, conduct surprise checks, and organise customer outreach programmes.The NGO will focus on consumers’ right to seek redressal in services related to post offices, banks, mobile and landline phones, LPG supply, electricity, GST, bus transport, and public toilets.Special focus will also be on raising consumer awareness about available complaint helplines and redressal agencies, such as the consumer conciliation committee, district consumer disputes redressal commission, and state consumer disputes redressal commission.
