PWD studies feasibility for 2 FOBs in east Delhi

New Delhi: Public Works Department (PWD) is assessing the feasibility of building foot overbridges (FOBs) with lift access at two busy stretches in east Delhi — near IP University, close to Shivam and Satyam Enclave, and at Welcome Cut on GT Road in Shahdara. Both locations connect dense residential clusters with institutional areas and arterial roads that carry traffic towards Shahdara and central Delhi. Pedestrians — particularly students during morning hours and office-goers in the evening — currently navigate through moving traffic to cross the road, making the stretch accident-prone. Officials said the proposed FOBs are intended to offer safe, barrier-free passage and help streamline traffic flow. The project is at the planning and assessment stage, with technical surveys under way to evaluate feasibility.Officials said the work falls under the Shahdara Road Division. The scope includes a detailed topographical survey of the main carriageway and service roads within the Right of Way (ROW) under PWD jurisdiction. This will map ground conditions, existing utilities, and space limitations before design options are finalised.A traffic volume survey will also be conducted to analyse pedestrian and vehicular movement. The data will help determine whether an FOB is warranted and what design would best ease congestion and ensure safe crossing for students, residents and daily commuters.Consultants will prepare two to three conceptual layout options for the FOBs. These will include section drawings, architectural features, and structural concepts, enabling authorities to compare designs before choosing one for final planning and execution. The final report will also outline recommendations on technical feasibility, safety standards and long-term usability, including lift access to ensure inclusivity for the elderly and people with disabilities. The initiative is part of a larger drive to enhance pedestrian safety. The govt’s FOB committee recently approved seven new pedestrian bridges at major intersections across PWD-managed arterial roads. These include Madhuban Chowk in northwest Delhi; Shahbad Dairy on Bawana Road; Ber Sarai Market near JNU; a spot near Okhla Sabzi Mandi; Shaheed Jeet Singh Marg in Katwaria Sarai; near Jeevan Park bus stand in Janakpuri; and near Mata Chanan Devi Hospital on Lal Singh Marg.
