9 days after chainsaw ripped stomach open, man back on feet after surgery

Noida: A 27-year-old man who had suffered a grievous abdominal injury in a chainsaw accident was saved after emergency surgery at a private hospital in Greater Noida West. The man was rushed there earlier this month in a critical condition after a running chainsaw tore open his abdominal wall, leaving part of his small intestine exposed. He had climbed a tree to cut branches when he lost balance, and the machine struck his abdomen. During a nearly three-hour operation, surgeons found the intestine torn at three places. Damaged sections were removed and reconnected, while deep cuts in the mesentery, a membrane that supplies blood to the intestine, were repaired to control bleeding. After nine days of recovery, the patient was discharged and is able to walk normally, Dr Kapil Kochhar, director of minimal access, bariatric, robotic and general Surgery at Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital, said. “When brought to the emergency department, the patient’s condition was extremely serious. Heavy blood loss and severe abdominal trauma with exposed intestine carry a high risk of infection and shock, making immediate surgical intervention essential,” the doctor said.
