Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Mauritius on Tuesday on a two -day visit, where Prime Minister Naveen Ramgulam and other ministers gave him a grand welcome. PM Modi met overseas Indians, in which women greeted them by singing traditional songs.
PM Modi will attend the National Day celebrations of Mauritius as the chief guest, whose historical relationship is with Mahatma Gandhi. In the year 1901, Mahatma Gandhi stayed in Mauritius while returning to India from South Africa and gave messages to the Indian community of education, political empowerment and being connected with India.
70% of the population in Mauritius is of Indian origin, most of which are descendants of indermatory laborers from Bihar. Historical and diplomatic relations between India and Mauritius have been deep. Mauritius plays an important role in India’s security and trade policy due to strategic status in the Indian Ocean. India has been cooperating deeply in defense, trade and education with Mauritius. FDI and business agreements have been strengthened between the two countries, while the Indian Navy has been helping Mauritius in disaster management and security cooperation.
