Gujarat assembly: Ahmedabad district registers drop in BPL families in 2 years

Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad: The socio-economic landscape of Gujarat’s major urban hubs is witnessing a significant shift, as the state government reported a sharp decline in the number of families living Below the Poverty Line (BPL) in Ahmedabad and Surat districts over the last two years. In a formal response to a query raised by Shailesh Parmar, the Congress MLA from Danilimda, the government revealed that the Ahmedabad district registered a total decrease of 10,164 BPL families during this period. As of December 31, 2025, the number of BPL families in Ahmedabad stood at 55,433.The data further shows that the pace of this decline accelerated recently; while Ahmedabad saw a reduction of 1,617 families in 2024, that number surged to 8,547 in 2025. A similar downward trend was noted in Surat, where the total BPL count reached 22,598 after 2,111 families transitioned out of the category in 2025 alone. These figures were provided alongside broader details concerning various ration card categories across both districts.
