Thyroid patients must avoid cabbage, say docs

Lucknow: Doctors cautioned people with thyroid disorders against excessive consumption of cabbage and other vegetables from the same family during a seminar organised to mark the foundation day celebrations of the department of general surgery at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) on Wednesday.More than 150 medical experts and students attended the second day of the surgical education programme, which focused on breast and endocrine surgery and surgical oncology.

Addressing the session, Prof Kushagra Gaurav said a high intake of cruciferous vegetables may affect thyroid hormone production, particularly among individuals with existing or borderline thyroid conditions. He said that soil in the Terai belt and districts of eastern UP is iodine-deficient, which impacts the iodine content of locally grown produce. Compounds present in these vegetables can interfere with hormone synthesis and may lead to goitre. He advised caution for vulnerable groups.Prof Geetika Nanda spoke on breast cancer awareness. Sessions on oral cancer were conducted by Prof Puneet and Prof Parijat Suryavanshi, who stressed early diagnosis for better outcomes. Postgraduate teaching included case presentations and discussions moderated by senior faculty, followed by a clinical workshop on chemoport insertion conducted under the guidance of Prof Gaurav.
