Man shoots himself dead outside in-laws’ house after ‘lover’ gives no entry

Kanpur: A 45-year-old man shot himself dead outside his in-laws’ house in Hallupura village of Etawah district on Tuesday night, allegedly after a woman with whom he was having an affair did not open the door, police said. The deceased was identified as Anil Kumar, a resident of Karhal in Mainpuri district who worked as a labourer. Police said Kumar had been married in Hallupura around 20 years ago and had two children. His wife died two years ago.According to police, Kumar had been in a relationship for about 12 years with Lakshmi, 40, the wife of his brother-in-law Satyanarayan. Investigators said that after his wife’s death, Kumar began insisting on living with Lakshmi, triggering repeated disputes with Satyanarayan and tensions within the family.Neighbours told police that about 10 years ago Kumar had eloped with Lakshmi from her in-laws’ home and took her to Delhi, where they frequently argued. They said Lakshmi later returned to her husband’s village. Police said that around three months ago Kumar again came to Hallupura to take Lakshmi with him, leading to a confrontation between the two sides. Police intervened at the time and a compromise was reached, after which Kumar left.On Tuesday night, Kumar returned to Hallupura. Lakshmi told police that Kumar called out at the house but she did not hear him. She said she was alone when she heard a gunshot and, on coming outside, found Kumar lying in a pool of blood near the main gate. Neighbours alerted police after hearing the gunfire. Additional superintendent of police (rural) Shrishchand reached the spot with force, questioned Lakshmi and local residents, and a forensic team collected evidence. Police said Kumar died on the spot after placing a pistol to his temple and firing. A pistol was found nearby. The incident took place in the Bakewar police station area, about 26 km from the district headquarters. Station in-charge Vipin Kumar Malik said the initial probe indicates suicide, though all angles are being examined, and further action will follow the post-mortem report.
