KANPUR: More than a month after a 14-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and gang raped in Sachendi, a police sub-inspector named in the case remains on the run. The accused was identified as sub-inspector Amit Kumar Maurya. The incident took place in Sachendi, an area of Kanpur. According to police, the girl – a class 7 dropout – was allegedly abducted around 10pm in a Mahindra Scorpio vehicle. She was reportedly taken to a deserted stretch near a railway track, where she was sexually assaulted for nearly two hours before being left unconscious outside her home. Based on the teenager’s statement, Sub-Inspector Amit Kumar Maurya and YouTuber Shivbaran Yadav were named in the FIR. Yadav has since been arrested. Maurya, however, remains absconding. Kanpur police commissioner Raghubir Lal had claimed in January that four teams were formed to trace the missing officer. The SUV allegedly used in the crime, which police say belongs to Maurya, was seized. Investigators said Maurya, who is posted at Bithoor Police Station, was present in the Sachendi area at the time of the alleged incident. Senior officers have faced action over the handling of the case. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Dinesh Chandra Tripathi was removed and Sachendi Station House Officer Vikram Singh was suspended. The girl’s family has accused the local police of trying to shield the accused. Her brother alleged that officers initially turned them away when they mentioned a policeman’s involvement. He also claimed that the girl’s mobile phone was seized and that she was not allowed to return home until her court statement was recorded.
