Tamil Nadu Money Lending Act: First case filed after man tries to kill self in Villupuram

Chennai: The first case under the Tamil Nadu Money Lending Entities (Prevention of Coercive Actions) Act, 2025 was registered on Feb 13 in Villupuram district after a borrower tried to die by suicide following a coercive loan recovery attempt by agents of a finance company. The complainant from Villupuram purchased a JCB five years ago with a loan from a lending agency at Thiruvennai Nallur. He did not pay the monthly instalments for the past two and a half years. On Feb 13, the manager of a recovery agency visited the complainant’s house and demanded repayment of the overdue loan instalments. His JCB was also seized without proper legal procedures. Following this, the complainant went into a nearby shed, and attempted to die by suicide. He was rushed to the hospital. TNN
