UT excise revenue near all-time high ahead of new policy launch | Chandigarh News

Chandigarh: With the UT administration preparing to roll out its new Excise Policy for 2026-27 by late February or early March, the Chandigarh excise department has collected Rs 846.66 crore in revenue till January-end. Of this, Rs 482.71 crore came from vend licence fees — the department’s single largest revenue source.Official records show that excise levies contributed Rs 272 crore, followed by Rs 36 crore from various licences and Rs 33 crore from assessment fees paid by retailers. Officials said revenue monitoring has been intensified, with targets fixed and special focus on areas that have shown lower collection potential in the past.An administration official said the excise department remains the UT’s biggest revenue generator, prompting continuous evaluation by senior officers and stricter enforcement, including penalties for violations. With two months of the financial year still remaining, officials expect a significant jump in total revenue by March 31.The department is also hopeful of surpassing its highest-ever revenue of Rs 863 crore, achieved in 2022-23, as collections have already reached Rs 846.66 crore. All ward and zone officers have been directed to maximise recovery in the final phase of the fiscal, officials added.
