Police said, this was the third fatal accident in the Joka-Thakurpukur zone in the past two weeks that killed five persons. All three accidents involved bikes. Two ESI doctors died near Silpara on James Long Sarani and a pillion rider died near the ESI gate while negotiating a U-turn in the earlier cases.According to cops, Sadukhan was heading home from Joka when the motorcycle lost control and the riders fell onto the road. Investigators are examining whether the bike skidded on its own or was struck from behind. A traffic police fatal squad officer said investigators are still working to establish the sequence of events and identify the vehicle that may have hit the motorcycle.“We did not find any CCTV footage but believe that, given the high volume of truck traffic, there is a possibility that a truck was involved. Since the accident took place on the leftmost lane of the Behala-bound flank, the fact that a car tried to overtake from the left and hit the bike cannot be ruled out. Also, we cannot rule out the fact that the biker skidded and then got hit by a vehicle coming from behind,” said an officer from the Fatal Squad of Traffic Police investigating the incident.“Both the riders sustained grievous injuries. They were shifted to Vidyasagar State General Hospital, where they were declared dead. Local police took charge of the matter,” said Rahul De, DC (Behala-Southwest).Last Saturday, commissioner of police Supratim Sarkar said that long-term measures to stop accidents are being taken. Sarkar said, “Our senior officers have looked into the situation. Measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.”A case was registered at Thakurpukur Police Station under sections 281/106(1)/324(4) of the BNS. An officer added that the case was transferred to the Fatal Squad of Traffic Police at Lalbazar for further investigation.
