Noida: On Feb 4, a woman received multiple calls from a person, who claimed to be an executive of a telecom provider. The caller asked whether she wanted to upgrade her SIM to get 5G services and after she confirmed, he placed a request on her behalf. The woman was told her SIM would be disabled for 24 hours. After the SIM service was restored, she found that multiple transactions were made from her bank accounts, resulting in a total loss of Rs 24.8 lakh, according to an FIR filed with Cyber Crime police, based on the complaint of her husband. The complainant said that the request was registered for an e-SIM rather than 5G. When the couple raised the issue, the caller told them it was necessary. Police said the SIM services remained inactive even after 24 hours. The caller then told them the delay was due to a technical issue. The matter continued until Feb 8, during which the fraudsters contacted them from different numbers and assured them that the issue would be resolved, the FIR said. The FIR said she immediately cancelled her cards and mobile banking services. The couple then approached the police and filed a complaint. Police registered the case under sections 318(4) (cheating) and 319(2) (cheating by personation) of BNS and sections 66 and 66D of the IT Act.
