Norwich City have beaten off competition from several UK rivals to land Dundalk defender Vinnie Leonard on a pre-contract worth at least €400,000 to the newly-promoted side.
Brighton and Hove Albion looked favourites to land the 17-year-old in January when they met Dundalk’s valuation but other bids followed and all parties have decided the Championship club is the right destination.
Significant add-ons for club and international progress form part of the package.
Leonard – who featured in Dundalk’s 2-2 draw at Derry City on Friday night – will remain at the club until the summer, departing for the Canaries once his Leaving Cert is completed.
“We are incredibly proud of Vinnie and everything he has achieved here,” said club Chairman Chris Clinton of the Meath man who flourished for Ireland at the U17 World Cup in November.
“This move is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and development, and it reflects positively on the club as a whole.
“It’s also a clear example of what we are committed to building at Dundalk FC — an Academy and player development pathway that gives talented young players the coaching, support and opportunities to emerge within our environment, contribute at first-team level, and be ready to seize the right opportunity when it presents itself.
“Vinnie has embraced that journey at every stage, and we’re delighted to see him earn this opportunity at Norwich City.
US-based Irishman Clinton added: “This has been a deal months in the making, with a huge amount of work done behind the scenes, and I want to personally thank Peter Halpin for his persistence and professionalism in conducting and eventually finalising the transfer on behalf of the club.”
First team boss Ciarán Kilduff said: “Vinnie has earned this opportunity through his performances, his attitude, and his commitment to improving every aspect of his game. He is a credit to himself and to the club.
“While we are proud of what this move represents for him, our full focus is on the here and now, and Vinnie remains fully committed to giving everything for the club until the summer.”
Dundalk host their first game of the season on Friday, welcoming Louth rivals to Oriel Park featuring a brand-new all-weather surface.
Meanwhile Cork City have announced the signing of AJ Bridge on loan from Norwich until the summer.
The 20-year-old attacking midfielder came through the academy at his hometown club Middlesbrough before moving to the Canaries in August of 2024.
“I was delighted to get the deal over the line and join Cork City,” he told the club’s official website.
“I came over yesterday and trained with the lads this morning, and I’ve been made to feel very welcome. I know it’s a big club with a passionate fanbase, so it’s a move that excites me and I can’t wait to get going.”
Cork City manager Barry Robson added: “We are pleased to get AJ on board. He can play anywhere in midfield, so he will add to our options in that area.
“He’s a good, creative footballer with an eye for a pass, so we are looking forward to working with him.”
