SUV kills 76-year-old man, driver arrested

New Delhi: A 76-year-old man died after an SUV allegedly skidded and struck him in east Delhi’s Ghazipur village on Saturday morning. A 26-year-old advocate who was allegedly driving the vehicle has been arrested. The deceased, identified as Paik Karmai, was a resident of Ghazipur village and worked at the Ghazipur flower mandi. A native of West Bengal, he was on his way to work with two co-workers when the incident occurred. Police received a PCR call around 6 a.m. “The crash occurred near a petrol pump along the NH-24 service road, where they found the severely damaged black SUV and Karmai on the road. He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead,” a senior police officer said.The SUV allegedly first hit a divider, then skidded between the main carriageway and service road, eventually hitting the pedestrian. The driver of the SUV has been identified as Shrey Kumar, a resident of Noida. The other occupants of the vehicle allegedly fled. Police added that the accused driver’s blood samples have been sent for forensic examination to determine whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol or any other intoxicant.
