Cabbie forges dead owners’ property docus in Gurgaon, sells plot

Gurgaon: The economic offences wing of the city police on Thursday arrested a man, who allegedly forged a general power of attorney (GPA) executed by the deceased property owners and transferring the plot to his name. The accused — Hansraj Kumar (52), a taxi driver — said he hatched the plan with a local, Gaurav Kataria, to grab a plot of land in Sushant Lok, which was owned by Ravindra Kakkad and Santosh Kakkad. Hansraj came to know about the plot from Kataria. After the duo found out that the owners had passed away in 2019 and 2020, they asked impersonators to take their place and execute the GPA. After the execution of the deed, Hansraj sold the plot to another couple for Rs 2 crore. The matter came to light after the original owners’ daughter-in-law filed a complaint at the Sushant Lok police station in July 2025. She claimed that when she approached the municipal corporation to transfer the property to her name after her in-laws’ death, she was told it already belonged to Rahul and Sonia Joshi.“Further inquiry revealed the transfer was executed by Kataria on the basis of a GPA prepared in Wazirabad. The registry of the property was carried out on Feb 6, 2025,” the officer said. The arrest was made by tracing document trails and the movements of the accused, he said, adding that the role of other associates involved in the fraud is also being examined.Hansraj, who hails from Ludhiana’s Khanna, was taken into custody from his hometown and brought to Gurgaon for police remand, police said. Kataria has not been arrested yet “but efforts are on to trace him”, they added.According to the officer, the accused will be in remand “for detailed interrogation, uncovering similar frauds and recovering the cheated amount”.
