Probe ordered as letter targeting RTI activists goes vital

Ahmedabad: A purported complaint letter allegedly written by an assistant town development officer (TDO) of the South Zone of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has gone viral on social media, triggering a controversy within civic circles. While a copy of the complaint was widely circulating online, the authenticity of the document could not be independently verified as the complainant remained unreachable. However, AMC officials confirmed that a preliminary probe has been initiated into the matter.

The letter, addressed to the director of the ACB, allegedly accuses several city-based RTI activists — including individuals said to be associated with both the BJP and the Congress — of engaging in blackmail. It claimed that the activists pressured officials through phone calls, WhatsApp calls and emails despite action being taken against illegal constructions. The document also reportedly lists the names, addresses, mobile numbers and details of RTI applications filed by nearly 20 activists. Senior officials of the AMC said repeated attempts were made to contact the assistant TDO to confirm whether the letter was genuine, but the officer could not be reached. “Given the seriousness of the allegations and the circulation of the document, an inquiry has been initiated,” a senior AMC official said on condition of anonymity.
