The investigation was initiated following a written complaint filed on Feb 2 by Sanat Gogoi, a resident of Charaideo at the Kakotibari Police Station. Gogoi reported that while updating his wife’s bank passbooks, they discovered that Rs 7.93 lakh had been fraudulently deducted from two separate accounts — one with a private bank and another with Assam Gramin Vikash Bank — on Oct 7, 2025.“The victims were unaware of the fraudulent debits for several months as they had not checked their passbooks since the day of the incident. Upon receiving the complaint, we registered a case and deployed our technical surveillance team to track the money trail. Our digital footprint analysis established that the stolen amount was funnelled into two specific bank accounts linked to mobile numbers active in West Bengal,” the ASP said.Following the lead, a Charaideo police team led by DSP (headquarters) Aryan Nath was dispatched to Islampur. With the assistance of West Bengal Police, the team tracked down and apprehended the suspects on Feb 11. “Charaideo police tracked the trail to Islampur, and with the assistance of the West Bengal Police, we apprehended both suspects,” Pegu said. The accused were brought back to Charaideo on a transit warrant and are currently being interrogated at Sonari Police Station.
