Tea workers, Adivasi groups protest Digboi man’s lynching

Dibrugarh: Tea garden workers and several Adivasi organisations held a protest in Digboi on Friday after a 26-year-old man, hailing from the Adivasi tea community, was allegedly lynched on Thursday.The organisations which held the protest included the Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association, All Assam Adivasi Students’ Union and Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha.

Buddheshwar Garh, a resident of Line No. 10 at Bogapani tea estate in Digboi, died after being allegedly assaulted by a group of fish traders early on Thursday at Digboi Chariali Bazar on charges of stealing fish.This lead to an outrage among the tea garden community and Adivasi organisations.While markets remained closed for the second consecutive day, protesters blocked NH-38, demanding justice for Garh, who succumbed to his injuries at Digboi Civil Hospital.Tinsukia senior superintendent of police Mayank Kumar said five persons have been arrested. The accused have been identified as Sher Khan, Ramjan Khan, Bikram Sahani, Ajim Ali and Sonu Bhattacharjee.
