Woman allegedly kills son, dies by suicide in Umra

Surat: A 26-year-old divorced woman allegedly killed her four-year-old son before dying by suicide at her residence in the Umra area on Friday morning. Police suspect mental distress and concerns over financial support following her divorce may have led to the incident. The deceased, identified as Poonam Tayade, had been living with her mother and brother at her parental home for the past few months after separating from her husband. According to police, her brother had stepped out for work on Friday. When he returned briefly to collect his mobile charger, he found Poonam and her son, Shivai, hanging inside the house.Poonam had married Karan Shah, a resident of Ahmedabad, five years ago in a love marriage. Shah reportedly worked at a cloth shop. According to her family, marital disputes developed over time. They alleged that during her pregnancy, she was sent to her parental home and was not properly cared for. The couple later separated, after which Poonam allegedly faced emotional and financial difficulties. Her mother, Usha, alleged that Poonam was subjected to harassment by her in-laws and claimed that her husband frequently cited financial problems and pressured her for divorce. She further alleged that Poonam was often asked to continue staying at her parental home.Police reached the spot after being informed and initiated an investigation. Officials said that, prima facie, the woman appeared to have taken the extreme step due to stress related to her divorce and concerns over livelihood and child support. Further inquiry is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the incident.
