CHENNAI: In an unexpected pre-poll move, chief minister M K Stalin on Friday credited Rs 5,000 in advance to 1.31 crore women under the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme, positioning it as a direct counter to what he called attempts by “Delhi-based forces” and their allies in Tamil Nadu to stall the disbursement ahead of the Assembly elections.
He also expressed confidence about retaining power and announced that the monthly financial assistance under the scheme would be enhanced to Rs 2,000 under the Dravidian Model 2.0 govt.Without naming the BJP or its ally AIADMK that heads the NDA in Tamil Nadu, Stalin said “a Delhi-based gang and its subservient gang in Tamil Nadu” were trying to halt the scheme for 3 months, citing the forthcoming Assembly elections.
He said information surfaced that some were planning to approach the court, prompting the govt to release the amount in advance.“As one among your family members, I know the difficulties you will face if the Urimai Thogai (financial aid) stops for 3 months. How will you manage monthly expenses, buy medicines for elders, or meet the education needs of your children? And that too in the hot summer months, when going to work itself is very hard. Keeping this in mind, I decided to credit Rs 3,000 as pre-payment for February, March and April, along with Rs 2,000 as summer assistance,” Stalin said in a video message. He said the amount was deposited early Friday into beneficiaries’ accounts “on behalf of our govt” and urged them to spend it carefully and save a portion.Calling the beneficiaries “beloved sisters”, Stalin said he was confident the Dravidian Model govt would continue with their support in the forthcoming Assembly polls.
“I want to make an important announcement at this juncture. In the Dravidian Model 2.0 govt, Urimai Thogai will be raised to Rs 2,000,” he said, adding that this was the promise of “Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin, who keeps his word”.He said doubts were being raised about its implementation, but the govt, which posted economic growth, would deliver.Recalling the rollout of the scheme, Stalin said many claimed it was not feasible.
But his govt managed the financial situation and overcame the Union govt’s discriminatory approach towards the state to launch the scheme in September 2023. The scheme initially covered 1.13 crore women and was recently expanded to 1.31 crore beneficiaries. He said it was not just financial support but recognition of women’s contribution to society. The assistance helped women meet essential needs, including education expenses and medical requirements in their families. “That is why every woman was waiting for the 15th of each month,” he said, adding that several states replicated the scheme.
