3-yr-old administered cough syrup meant for 14+, dies

Jhansi: A three-year-old girl in Hamirpur district died after being given cough syrup meant for kids aged 14 and above, sparking an investigation and action against the woman who administered the dose. The incident took place in the Sichauli Purwaha area under the Maudaha police station limits on Tuesday. According to reports, the child was suffering from a cough and cold when her parents took her to a local clinic, allegedly run by a woman who worked as an outsourced attendant at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Arkhara village. The parents alleged that the woman administered a cough syrup unsuitable for the child’s age. The girl’s health reportedly deteriorated soon after, leading to her death.Hamirpur SP Deeksha Sharma, said, “The parents of the girl are giving us a complaint based on which we will lodge an FIR. A probe has already begun in the case.”Taking serious cognisance, the district administration ordered a detailed post-mortem examination by a panel of three doctors. Chief Medical Officer Dr Gitam Singh said no immediate cause of death was found during the autopsy. “The viscera has been preserved and sent for further investigation. Action will be taken based on the report,” he said. The CMO added that the woman has been ordered to be removed from her position as she was not authorised to prescribe medicines, while denying that she officially operated a clinic. Police said further legal action will follow based on the post-mortem and forensic findings.
