Jaipur: Rajasthan Police Tuesday said it deployed a high-tech traffic enforcement system on the Shahjahanpur-Ajmer stretch of National Highway-48 in a major push to curb accidents and improve road discipline, officials said Monday. The system uses mounted cameras and intelligent analytics to detect traffic violations in real time, eliminating the need for manual checks on the highway.
Additional director general of police (traffic) B L Meena said gantry-based enforcement units equipped with high-resolution cameras were installed at 27 key locations along the NH-48 corridor. “These cameras can identify violations instantly without any human intervention,” he said.Under the new mechanism, vehicles will no longer be stopped for issuing challans. Once a violation is detected, the system automatically generates an e-challan under the Motor Vehicles Act, which is sent directly to the registered mobile number of the vehicle owner. Officials said this will improve transparency and ensure smooth traffic flow on the busy highway stretch.Police said the system will focus on seven serious violations — overspeeding, riding without a helmet, triple riding on two-wheelers, using mobile phones while driving, not wearing seat belts, lane violations, and driving in the wrong direction. Cameras will automatically capture these offences and initiate action.Meena said the objective of the initiative is not punishment but prevention. “This system is meant to save lives by reducing accidents and encouraging responsible driving behaviour,” he said, urging motorists to strictly follow traffic rules to avoid fines and ensure their own safety and that of others.Officials said the NH-48 deployment is expected to serve as a model for expanding intelligent traffic enforcement systems to other major highways across the state.
