Noida: The district administration has provided interim relief of Rs 1 lakh each to the families of two labourers who died after scaffolding collapsed at an under-construction commercial building in Sector 142 on Sunday afternoon. Additionally, the employer has deposited Rs 30 lakh with the Employee Compensation Commissioner under the Workmen’s Compensation Act to be given to their families.Mantu, a native of Banka district in Bihar and Shibu Kumar, from Dumka district in Jharkhand, died in the accident, while another worker who was injured in undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city. “The amount will be disbursed as Rs 15 lakh each to the legal heirs of the two deceased labourers after completion of the required formalities,” assistant labour commissioner Suyash Pandey told TOI.Pandey said that the department is currently verifying whether the deceased workers were registered with the department. “We sought records related to the deceased and the injured worker. If it is found that the workers were registered with the labour department, their families will be eligible for an additional assistance of Rs 5 lakh each under the applicable welfare schemes,” he said.Following the accident, a joint inspection was carried out at the site by SDM Sadar, officials from the labour and factories departments, and police personnel. The contractor was asked to submit documents related to worker registration and establishment compliance. Officials said the contractor sought time to furnish the records.Brijesh Kumar, deputy director of the factories department, GB Nagar, told TOI that the department will take other workers’ statements to assess negligence at the site. Further action, including scrutiny of the safety compliance at the site, will be taken after examination of all the documents, officials said.
