Guwahati railway station gets modern passenger facility

Guwahati: Union minister for railways, information and broadcasting, electronics and information technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw virtually inaugurated a passenger facility at Guwahati railway station on Monday, marking a step towards modernising railway infrastructure and enhancing passenger comfort. The facility which is located outside the railway station, is aimed at providing world class amenities, which includes a sleeping pod, a modern air-conditioned lounge, and multi-cuisine restaurants that will enhance passenger comfort and provide a refined, hygienic and customer-friendly travel experience. These facilities ensure travellers have access to safe, convenient, and restful environments, improving overall station usability. The facility also ensures dedicated, hygienic and secure amenities for women travellers.Vaishnaw said, “The govt has significantly increased rail funding for the region over the past decade, with a record allocation of Rs 11,486 crore in the Union Budget 2026-27 for the northeastern states. Projects worth around Rs 72,468 crore are already underway in the region, underscoring a sustained push to enhance connectivity and infrastructure.” He said this focus reflects the PM’s belief that development of the northeast is integral to a ‘Viksit Bharat’. He emphasised that rail connectivity not only facilitates passenger movement but also boosts economic activity, enabling easier movement of goods, fostering trade, and opening up markets for local products.
