Child’s death: Mayor calls for sanitation & water safety review

Chandigarh: Following a report by TOI on the death of an eight-year-old girl in Mauli Jagran, Chandigarh mayor Saurabh Joshi called for immediate preventive measures to address sanitation and drinking water issues in the area. Referring to the report of contaminated and disrupted water supply, sewage overflow, non-functional tubewells, and cases of water-borne diseases such as jaundice, typhoid and hepatitis, the mayor sought urgent restoration of water infrastructure, cleaning of sewage lines and interim arrangements for safe drinking water.He also called for coordination with the health department to ensure medical support and preventive action. Pointing to similar complaints from Sector 49 and Dhanas, he asked the MC to fix accountability and carry out systemic corrections, stressing that access to clean water and sanitation must remain a priority.

“The safety and well-being of citizens, especially children, cannot be compromised. Preventive action, responsiveness and accountability are essential to ensure that such tragic incidents are not repeated,” the Mayor said.
