OHRC orders Rs 10L aid to kin of man murdered in Subarnapur in 2024

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has recommended a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of a Subarnapur man, who was murdered on Jan 26, 2024.OHRC passed the order on Friday to help Damburu Adhikari’s elderly parents from financial distress after the death of the sole breadwinner of the family.The Subarnapur SP said a chargesheet was filed against the accused in Damburu’s murder. “Notwithstanding the filing of the chargesheet, no victim compensation was yet paid to the next of kin of the deceased,” read the order.Damburu operated a tea stall as well as organised a band party, on which the livelihood of his parents depended. Further, the deceased belonged to the SC community, and the family was part of the marginalised section.“Having considered the facts and circumstances of the case, this commission is of the view that the family is entitled to compensation,” read the order.OHRC accordingly recommended the state govt to provide Rs 10 lakh compensation to the next of kin of the deceased within two months from the date of receipt of the order.“The home department shall take up the matter with the district legal services authority and other concerned authorities to facilitate the aforesaid payment without delay. A compliance report of the payment shall be submitted to this commission within the said period of two months,” the order stated.
