Vigilance case against Majithia: Court grants bail to co-accused Gulati

Chandigarh: The court of additional sessions judge Hardip Singh has granted regular bail to Harpreet Singh Gulati, in connection with the vigilance case linked to former Punjab minister and Akali Dal Bikram Singh Majithia.Granting the bail on a bond of Rs 1 lakh on Friday, the court directed Gulati to surrender his passport and cooperate fully during the trial. The order came after persuasive submissions by Gulati’s counsel advocate Charanjit Singh Bakhshi, who argued that his client had been falsely implicated despite having earlier cooperated with the investigators as a prosecution witness.Bakshi contended that Gulati had furnished all financial records to the vigilance bureau and was cited as a witness before being unjustly arrested. He stressed that the agency’s action amounted to a fresh investigation, impermissible under law, citing multiple Supreme Court judgments. The defence maintained that Gulati had clean antecedents and had no role in routing any illegal funds.Considering the arguments, the court observed that the investigation against the accused was complete and that further custody would serve no purpose. After hearing all pleas, the court granted bail to Gulati.MSID:: 128037265 413 |
