Lucknow: Aam Aadmi Party has begun active campaigning for the 2027 UP Assembly elections, although it is yet to decide whether to contest independently or in alliance with another party. The party has identified around 10-12 seats where it believes it has strong candidates or a significant presence and plans to hold public meetings. Its first campaign meeting was held on Sunday in Faridpur Assembly constituency in Bareilly, where it backed Vinay Singh Jatav, president of AAP’s Panchayat Prakosht.AAP Rajya Sabha MP and UP in-charge Sanjay Singh said the party had identified around 12 seats where it had a strong presence, particularly in areas covered by its padyatras. It will hold public meetings in these constituencies over the next few weeks, he told TOI.Singh has met SP president Akhilesh Yadav on a few occasions recently, raising questions about an alliance possibility. AAP has been a supporter of SP and while it is no longer a member of the INDIA bloc, and had not fielded any candidates from UP in 2024 LS elections, its cadre had campaigned for the SP-Congress alliance across the state.Asked about a possible alliance with SP, Singh said: “This matter will be decided by the political affairs committee and Arvind Kejriwal.”Matters for AAP get complicated since AAP and Congress are political rivals in Punjab which goes to polls in 2027. Sources indicated unless SP and Congress alliance is finalised, AAP will continue to presume it will be going solo in UP.
