Sole earner gone, kin buried under 35L debt: Death from string leaves several loose knots

Lucknow: A day after a 35-year-old man died due to injuries caused by Chinese manjha, his grieving wife revealed that with the sole earning member now gone, the household was not just emotionally shattered but economically burdened with loans amounting to nearly Rs 35 lakh.Mohammad Shoaib, a medical representative, died after his throat was slit by a kite string near the Haiderganj flyover Wednesday evening.

Speaking to TOI, she said her husband was deeply worried about repaying the loans, most of which had been taken to purchase and build their house. “He used to remain tense about the debt all the time. He worked as a sales manager of a pharma company. The responsibility of the family and the loans was constantly on his mind,” she said. The couple got married in 2017 and have two minor girls. The woman said she was not employed and had stayed at home to look after the children. “When the children were small, he asked me not to stay home and focus on taking care of them,” she said. She alleged that so far, no representative from his employer has approached the family to offer any assistance, or even reassurance. The widow added that the family is now surviving on hope that the govt may step in with some form of compensation or relief. Meanwhile, the body of Shoaib was brought to his Dubagga home on Thursday morning after the postmortem. His mother, who lost her husband 8 years ago, was inconsolable at the sight of her only son. His wife fainted repeatedly. On regaining consciousness, she kept saying, “Look, how smart he looks while sleeping. Someone please wake him up.” Neighbours said Shoaib bought the house barely 5 months ago and recently completed renovation. “He had plans for his daughters. He would say he wanted to educate them well and see them become an officer and a doctor,” said a neighbour, Mohammad Rehaan. His brother-in-law, Afsar Khan, said: “There is his 75-year-old mother, his wife and 2 young daughters. He was working to secure their future and even planned to rent part of the house for income.”
